Why I Enjoy Taking Photos

It helps me be more mindful on ordinary days

Not long ago, I would be annoyed at my daughter for stopping us from diving into a lovely meal at a restaurant so that she could take a photograph of the pristine plate.

She was on social media. I was not.

Of course, I wasn’t pleased with this public display of our life, even if the pictures didn’t include our faces.

Now she is far away in another country. I am not sure if she still stops to take pictures of everyday life.

But I do.

Surprised?

So am I.

Learning new skills

When my daughter was a baby, taking photos of her milestones was a major project. I needed a camera, film and enough training to capture those rare moments when your baby is looking cute, smiling and cooperating for the photograph.

Now, it’s easy to hold your phone in position for a quick click. Although the smartphones equipped with high quality lenses have become ubiquitous, I have only recently begun to consciously capture ordinary moments with the help of my phone.
